EEMD and THT Based Gearbox Fault Detection and Diagnosis

A novel approach to fault detection and diagnosis of gearbox based on Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) and Teager Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) technique is presented. The time-domain vibration signal of the gearbox with gear crack fault is measured. EEMD can adaptively decompose the vibration signal into a series of zero mean Amplitude Modulation-Frequency Modulation (AM-FM) Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) without mode mixing. TKEO can track the modulation energy of the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) and estimates the instantaneous amplitude and instantaneous frequency. Then the Teager-Huang transform (THT) spectrum of the vibration signal can be obtained. Therefore, the character of the gear crack fault can be recognized according to the THT spectrum. The effectiveness of this approach is evaluated by using simulation signal and vibration signals measured in a gearbox. The results demonstrate that EEMD and THT are suited for capturing transient events such as the propagation of structural fault in a gear, thus providing a viable signal processing tool for gearbox fault detection. The Teager-Huang transform (THT) has better resolution than that of Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT).
